Mott Children’s Hospital, the 10th floor’s most popular visitor takes a short break from try this out cheering up patients to lay down on the hospital floor for a few seconds. Denver, the hospital’s new service dog, has earned a short belly scratch break. These are truly the dog days of summer inside the hospital with the recent arrival of Denver a Labrador-retriever mix – and his canine friend Anna – a golden retriever – who have been brightening the spirits of patients and their families over the past couple of weeks. Arriving at the end of July from suburban Atlanta, Denver and Anna have been trained their entire lives for what they are doing now: being there for patients to pet, defusing tension in hospital rooms and bringing a calming presence to the room. Raised with the purpose of service work since their births, each dog completed more than a year’s worth of training via Canine Assistants before trainers and caretakers Lindsay Bona and Joel Maier traveled to Georgia this summer for a weeklong orientation and training. Denver is under the caring supervision of Maier, a Mott Certified Child Life Specialist, who has noticed the immediate impact a service dog can have on patients and their families in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. “When he walks into a room I’ve had parents tell me ‘we’ve been here for two weeks and this is the first time our child has smiled,’” Maier said. “They encourage kids quickly to get up and start moving, which increases their activity and that gets them out of here sooner.” While Denver spends most of his time in PICU, Anna has been making the rounds in Mott with Bona, a Reverend and manager of the Spiritual Care Department at the University of Michigan Health System. Bona describes Anna as a bit more active than Denver and willing to sometimes walk miles a day to visit patients via referral throughout the UMHS, getting on her hind legs to stand at a patient’s eye level to address them. Denver, on the other hand, takes a more laid back approach in sitting close by a patient’s side — sometimes taking a break to sprawl out on the floor and rest.
